I love you is arguably one of the most overused and under-appreciated phrases. These words have so much power, yet we don't think through the impact of this phrase before we say it. Many people use this phrase as a tool to gain access to certain areas in life. Sadly, after they get what they want, they leave others feeling taken for granted or treated poorly -- and the relationship is lost.
Why does this happen? Because trust is broken. The words I love you have the power to gain access, but they do not have the power to keep you at the point of your desire. Trust can maintain a relationship through many difficult challenges in business and personal relationships. You must know how to trust. The capacity to trust others and yourself and the wisdom to know when to do so is a powerful attribute that enables you to live an extraordinary life. Love can overlook many imperfections. Trust does not. Trust demands perfection. Unlike love, trust must be earned. What is trust? To trust someone is to rely on the character, ability, and word of that person. What do the words I trust you mean? We may trust our children to come home by a curfew and not to do illegal drugs. But we wouldn't trust a child to make financial decisions for our business. Trust is item-specific. So I trust you is an inaccurate and misleading statement. Trust is conditional and circumstantial. We don't really trust a person, we trust a person's judgement for a situation. But I do know, that without trust, it is certainly difficult to completely love that same person.... I trust that you will have a fabulous day!!! : ) XOXO Shelly |
